Businesses in BC have always had to protect tangible products such as stock, merchandise, office computers, petty cash etc but they also have to protect another valuable and desirable asset — information. During the ordinary course of operations a typical business not engaged in selling products or services accumulates a large volume of personal information about its employees for legitimate reasons. It is obvious that staff members will not want their information disclosed to people outside the business, nor will employers want to run the risk of exposing that same information to anyone who has no reason to want that information. She has helped many companies, from small one person start-ups to large corporations, make the best and most educated choice of color for product development, logos and identification, brand imaging, web sites, packaging, point of purchase, interior/exterior design or any other application where color choice is critical to the success of the product or environment. She heads the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training and is also executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Lee is the author of seven books on color, her latest being COLOR: Messages and Meanings, a Pantone® Color Resource (Hand Books Press, Gloucester, MA). This new book is a companion to the Pantone® Guide to Communicating With Color. Other books include More Alive With Color, Personal Colors—Personal Style (Capital Books, Sterling, VA); the Color Answer Book and Colors For Your Every Mood (Capital Books, Sterling, VA), which was chosen as a Book of the Month Club selection and received an award from the Independent Publisher’s Association; also, the Pantone Guide to Communicating With Color (F&W Publications, Cincinnati, OH) which has been named by How Design Magazine as one of the top 20 books for the designers shelf.

Lee was named in the group of 50 top style makers for the third year in a row (#17 the first year moving up to #13 last year and then to #12 this year) by Home Furnishings Now, the leading home furnishings trade publication. And recently Fortune Magazine featured her as one of the top decision makers. A little closer to home, Seattle Homes & Lifestyles Magazine named Lee as one of the top 100 people, places and things that define Seattle Design. Lee conducts many color seminars and is widely quoted in publications such as Elle Decor, Home Magazine, House and Garden, Home Accents Today, HFN, Harper's Bazaar, WWD, Glamour, Vogue, People Magazine, Self, Communication Arts, Graphic Design USA, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and Ad Age, as well as numerous other trade and consumer publications. Lee has made appearances on CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, HGTV, Discovery Channel and the FOX network in the U.S. as well as abroad and has been interviewed by radio stations worldwide.

Her academic background includes a degree in psychology from Antioch as well as advanced studies and a counseling specialist certificate from UCLA. She has studied both fashion and interior design and has taught in both areas. She is a member of the American Trends Committee as well as the international forecasting group for the Pantone View Color Planner.

Lee is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Industrial Design Society of America as well as the Fashion Group and has received the prestigious service award from the Color Marketing Group where she serves as a chairholder. She has been a member of the advisory board for the Advertising Age/Arizona State University Symbols and Graphics Retention Study. The Color Association of the U.S. named her color concepts as "tops in the field of color". She is named in TWO THOUSAND NOTABLE AMERICAN WOMEN published by the American Biographical Institute and is a recipient of an IMMIE Award and the Key Award for Notable Author. Her color selections for various industries have won numerous awards, most recently from Industrial Design Magazine for the newest group of colorful Leatherman Utility Tools called “Juice”. Schick Women’s “Intuition” Shaver was selected for recognition in IDSA’s Winter 2003 publication “Innovations”.

209 - SEEKING SKILLED LABOUR — BCCA INITIATIVES

There are three BC Construction Association initiatives that have been initiated to provide HR services to the construction industry. The three groups that are primarily targeted are aboriginals (A-STEP), landed immigrants (ISTEP) and skilled construction trades people from Europe (EU-STEP). A-STEP has established a number of partnerships with Aboriginal training associations. ISTEP is a pilot program that is forming a bridge between the immigrant community and the construction industry. EU-STEP sources skilled trades people in Europe and places them with construction companies that have a shortage of skilled labour. All STEP initiatives employ job coaches in order to ease transition into the workplace.

Throughout the 90’s the installation of consumer electronics in upscale homes arrived and entered the main stream. It would have been hard to miss. Now, an entirely new version has defined itself. While it has yet to earn a formal name the “infrastructural centralized system” has arrived under the cloak of the “integrated system” or “home automation”. It is responding to the growing awareness and desire of an increasingly wealthy clientele to have access to centralized audio collections, video collections, dimming control, data, internet access and temperature control. They represent both an opportunity and a challenge to the design community.
