She has taught design with a specialty in color at Stanford University, California College of Arts and Crafts, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Ms. Bourne is a nationally recognized lecturer and design juror, and her designs are widely published in books and nationally distributed periodicals. She has been awarded medals of distinction from A.S.I.D., The Smithsonian Institution, Cine Arts, I.F.D.A., and N.A.S.F.T.

121 - Advantages of Combining Architectural and Structural Functions

The use of precast concrete often extends beyond an architectural enclosure to include structural elements and stair systems. Integration of the structure, building envelope and vertical circulation is often referred to as a Total Precast System. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Best Practice Guide for Architectural Precast Concrete Walls, published in 2002, has now added a new section incorporating load-bearing precast concrete walls that can be used to build total precast structures.

This seminar will illustrate precast design and construction practices that can produce aesthetically pleasing, functional and durable building structures and envelopes. Participants will obtain new details and information that will allow the successful design of precast concrete wall assemblies. Recommendations, advantages and limitations of combining the exterior precast concrete cladding with interior framing to form a total precast concrete building shell will be presented.

211 - Building In Earthquake Country

Nearly half a million people have died and $25 billion in economic losses have resulted from earthquakes in the past year. While Canadian structures built in recent years are largely earthquake resilient, the nonstructural components, comprising 85% of the investment, are still at significant risk. Seismic mitigation requirements have been in the National Building Code since 1953, but have not been incorporated into standard construction practice. BC Building Code authorities are now tightening the seismic mitigation requirements significantly, to reduce risk, liability and litigation. The attendee will learn about:

  • What nonstructural mitigation work is required by the Code. How effective compliance can speed building permits, avoid unexpected budget overruns and reduce delays in occupancy permits.
  • Specialized project management of seismic mitigation work to avoid delays and stress.

213 - GVRD’s Sustainable Landscape Design Guideline Workshop

This short, succinct overview document covers the major sustainable landscape design strategies that are applicable in the greater Vancouver region, and is organized into two sections: LEED® criteria and those strategies and technologies that are beyond LEED. This Guideline presents regionally-relevant solutions, supported by local case studies that are applicable to the local climate, geography and ecosystem. Since the Supreme Court of Canada gave us a more "nuanced" approach to considering the costs of projects, and an implied duty of fairness as a term of Contract A, our Courts have been busy interpreting and reinterpreting tendering issues. In this session, David Garner will bring you up to date on the latest tendering pronouncements by our Courts and the trend toward increased owner's "discretion" rights/attempts to negotiate with bidders and accept bids that may "appear" non-compliant.

Risk and the Design Professional

Avenues for recovery against design professionals continue to grow. At the same time, the traditional method of protection from third parties and others, the professional liability policy, has never been more restrictive in the coverage offered or more expensive to obtain. This trend will continue to have a significant impact on the entire construction industry. In this seminar, Christopher Hirst focuses on the developments in Canadian law which has led to a substantially riskier climate for design professionals and provides some suggestions on how design professionals can better insulate themselves from that risk.

215 - Post-Occupancy Evaluation - Closing the Loop on Sustainable Design

This seminar will focus on the benefits and opportunities associated with post-occupancy evaluation. This kind of evaluation requires a team to return to a building between one and five years after occupancy to assess how well the building is working, to see if the energy and water consumption targets are being met and to see how well maintenance staff, users and managers feel about the building and its operation. This presentation will focus on the results from a series of evaluations that have been performed in BC, a new public post-occupancy evaluation protocol that Stantec have developed that will help guide future evaluations both by us and by others and the reasons why owners and developers may wish to consider this kind of evaluation for their projects. 216 - INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO INDOOR AIR QUALITY, MOULD AND MOISTURE MANAGEMENT

Fueled by media hype and the efforts of a new and growing army of "Mould is Gold" consultants with the help of plaintiff 's attorneys, the issue of IAQ and related mould and moisture problems has been spun as the new asbestos, a plague to commercial and public buildings and a threat to the health of occupants. Coupled with this the liability and property insurance industry has responded by withdrawing coverage for mould claims associated with moisture in buildings. Prudent property management companies have responded to this new and important challenge by implementing Pro-Active IAQ and Moisture Management Programs across their portfolios of properties. This session is intended to clear up much of the misinformation that is circulating in the industry and to demystify the IAQ and mould and moisture issues in buildings for the construction, property management and real estate industries. The session starts with an overview of health, construction and remediation standards and guidelines for IAQ and mould and moisture control, followed by a discussion of cost-effective proactive solutions for IAQ mould and moisture control being implemented by property management companies across Canada and concludes with an introduction to new moisture and IAQ sensor technologies and Web-based communication protocols.
